    For those of you that are new to the sport, don't worry, there are also plenty of beginner slopes, equal to the best in Japan. However, it you want to go hardcore Hakuba is the place - nowhere else in Japan can you catch a lift to the top, hike for 30 minutes and jump straight off the side into a 1,000 vertical metre backcountry powder descent (avalanches happen-make sure you go with a qualified guide!).

    Hakuba itself is relatively accessible from Tokyo - 3 or 4 hours on a train will see you there, and once you are there, the Echoland region of Hakuba is loaded with bars, restaurants and shops so the fun doesn't finish when you get off the slopes. If you are into Japanese culture there is plenty of that as well with onsens (hot springs), traditional Japanese temples and even a traditional village or 2 nearby.
